Staffed by award-winning teachers, the classes, workshops, and performing groups at Actor's Youth Theatre (AYT) offer each student the opportunity to explore every aspect of the performing arts in ways that are engaging, entertaining, and enriching for every skill level. 


Whether it's learning to sing or act or dance, or just wanting to be able to stand in front of people and speak, our classes are designed to help each student learn and practice the skills that can make them more effective on the stage, and in life. Broadway Rep

Monday

Ages 12+

Broadway Rep, short for “repertoire”, students will learn dance combinations weekly to increase choreography retention. They will gain a greater repertoire and understanding of musical theatre choreography styles and how to adapt to them all. Broadway Rep works at a quicker pace in order to develop stronger performance skills onstage and in the audition room. Must have 2-3 years of prior ballet/jazz dance training.

 

Broadway Jazz 1/2

Ages 8+

Broadway Jazz 1/2 is a beginning/intermediate level class that will expose students to the wide variety of Jazz that exists in musical theatre. Students will focus on isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Jazz is the most common dance style found on Broadway and a key element to becoming a smooth and entertaining dancer.

Broadway Tap 1/2 is a beginning/intermediate class that focuses on technique, style and tap speed mastery. This class is catered towards the rhythms and tempos that are used on Broadway to ensure confidence in performance and musical tap auditions. Beyond becoming an excellent tapper, students will grow in character expression through movement and placement. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, and a knowledge of tap vocabulary.

 

Ballet 1/2

Broadway Ballet 1/2 is a beginning/intermediate level class that focuses on lines and core placement that sets dancers apart in musical auditions. Students will learn the basics of ballet, timing and musicality, proper stretching technique, vocabulary and application to musical theatre performance.

Theatre Mechanics

Theatre Mechanics is an intermediate class that will dig into the methods of practice in acting and performance. Interlacing ideas from many of the great studios and teachers of stage history, students will be lead to find a path to the heart of their characters and how to portray them organically on stage. This class will involve monologues and group scenes, as well as exploring the anatomy of a scene, character relationships, and how to navigate them. Additionally, we will learn the nuances of facial expressions, body movement, and language. If you are looking to take your acting to the next level, this is the class for you!!

 

Broadway Jazz 2/3

Broadway Jazz 2/3 is a advanced level class that will dig deep into Jazz dance and Jazz culture. Students in this class will incorporate jazz technique (i.e. pirouettes, kicks, jetes, etc.) while staying true to Broadway-inspired choreography and music.  Students will be expected to continue work on strength and flexibility to enhance their skills and continue to grow as dancers.

This is an intermediate class that focuses on technique, style and tap speed mastery. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. Beyond becoming an excellent tapper, students will grow in character expression through movement and placement. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, knowledge of tap vocabulary, and learning stage presence.

 

Ballet 3/4

Broadway Ballet 3/4 is an intermediate/advanced ballet class that builds off of Broadway Ballet 1/2. Including the beautiful dance dream sequences in many musicals, ballet is a necessary skill to succeed on Broadway. Students will be pushed further in technique and learn vocabulary that is often used in Broadway dance calls. They will learn to quickly retain choreography and be more confident in turns and leaps. This class will also explore character development expression through body movement that is necessary for all musical theatre dancing. Teacher approval required.

Stretch and Conditioning

Stretch and Conditioning is for students who want to engage themselves in a class where they learn the proper techniques to a half hour warm up session. They will learn proper stretching methods and they will learn how to condition to get their blood flowing for dancing. * recommended for performing group stidents*

 

Advanced Acting for Teens

Advanced Teen Acting is designed as a culmination of the student’s acting training and as preparation for entry into the professional community and college. This class will focus on recognizing character types, the choice of suitable audition material, interacting with partners and making choices. Under the supervision of the instructor, students will focus on selecting and rehearsing monologues to prepare them for auditions and performances.

 

Broadway Tap 3/4

Broadway Tap 3/4 is an intermediate/advanced class that takes basic technique, style and tap speed mastery to a whole new level. This class will push tappers in technique, with new moves and crazy fast speeds. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique while being able to steal the stage with stage presence and grace. Teacher approval required.

 

Hip Hop

Hip hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, break dancing, popping, and locking. Students will be encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements and dance moves. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves.

Voice Tech

This class will include an introduction to the fundamentals of vocal production with an emphasis on breathing techniques, tone production, diction and performance through group/solo singing. Also including elements of stage presence, music theory to build their knowledge of notes, rhythms, dynamics, reading sheet music and introduce them to recognizing pitches and intervals by sound.  During this course they will not only work on group technique and learn to balance and blend, but will also work on their individual solos. As well will also focus on Aural Perception (training the ear). Music is both auditory and visual and by combining both of these, it takes your musicianship to the next level!

 

Storybook Theatre

“Once Upon A Time” there was a prince and princess who lived in a land far, far, away. In this class we will take a classic fairytale and bring it to life with the help of a little bit of theatre magic. We will learn the basics of telling a story and everyone will play a part in creating this magical journey to “Happily Ever After”!

 

Swing Kids

Ages 10+

Swing Kidz is a new dance class that focuses on the performance and social aspects of Vintage Swing. With varieties of dances from the 20’s Charleston to the 40’s Lindy Hop, this course will push young dancers to return to old dance styles while learning new tricks. Partner work, lifts and aerials and solo jazz will all be included in this class, as well as guest teachers that teach and compete in swing worldwide. This is a swell way to get outside of one’s comfort zone and jam out to the best era of music. This class will have performance opportunities and all that jazz.
You are not required to have a partner to sign up.

 

Little Triples

Little Triples class is an introduction for students who love to perform and want to be triple threats. They will work their skills in singing, dancing and acting. Throughout the year they will focus on stage performance confidence and taking their technique to the next level.

 
 

Theatre Artistry

In our Theatre Artistry class, Students will work with the  directors to design and make props and set pieces as well as learn the many elements necessary to make rehearsals and shows run smoothly. They will be given design opportunities in class and will be guided through the process of making their designs a reality.  Tech opportunities are available in the areas of set design, costume design, props design, choreography, stage management, music direction , sound and light design and operation and so much more!  

Students will tech the performances and the projects  created in the Tech Class will be featured in our Encore Productions!!

Encore Production!

Friday

Ages 8-15

Students ages 8-15 will participate in rehearsals and performances of a musical production. This class meets once a week for 1.5 hours per week for 12 weeks. The Encore Class focuses on developing teamwork, self-confidence and production creation.  It will culminate into a full show performance at the end of the 12 weeks. This class will give youth the experience of what goes into creating a professional quality musical production. 

Everybody will get a part! Parts will not be announced until after two weeks into class time. Remember, most musical theater is ensemble driven, so, teamwork is most important in theatre!

Final Performance is December 1
